CHAPTER TEN

As the landscape changed and became more familiar. The trees, dunes, and rock dotted shores pointed the way home. We were headed to my parents for dinner and then back to the beach house for our second last night together. Camille would drop me off first at my parent’s place and drive out to the beach house to check on things and handle some calls. She also wanted to give me some time alone with my folks before her arrival. I hadn’t spoken to my mother for more than five minutes since Christmas day when I called her from LA and I knew that she probably had a lot of questions.

I pulled up in front of my parent’s tiny house. Our arrival there pretty much marked the end of our road trip and I felt the pangs of loss begin to stir in my belly already in anticipation of Camille’s departure. This time was different. I knew she would come back. I trusted her. But readying myself for phase two of our long distance relationship was still hard.

I hopped out of the truck and Camille slid over. Just then, I saw my mom’s head pop out the front door.

“Claire-Bear! Oh my gosh, I was hoping that was you!” She ran down the steps and pulled me into a big hug, while she cooed in my ear. Camille caught my eye and smiled as she watched me being squeezed to death by my mother’s wiry arms.

Mom pulled back and grabbed my face. “You look great, sweetie. Oh my gosh. So beautiful and strong.” She looked at me and her eyes got watery.

“Mom, this is Camille,” I said, pointing her in the right direction. Camille smiled and offered her hand.

“My goodness,” My mother said. “I wish I could say that Claire’s told me all about you but she hasn’t. I’m so pleased to finally meet you, Camille. Welcome,” she said, taking her hand.

“Thank you. I’m very pleased to finally meet you too, Nancy.”

“Camille’s not staying, mum. She’s got a few things to take care of back at the beach house and then she’ll be back before dinner. I thought I’d help you get everything ready,” I smiled.

“Oh, that sounds lovely,” mom said.

“I look forward to it,” Camille smiled. She kissed me quickly and then walked around to the driver side door. “See you in a while,” she said.

We watched her drive away. My mom curled her arm around my waist and guided me inside. “She’s quite the looker.”

“I know,” I said as we stepped inside the house. “Where’s dad?”

“Oh, he’s working at the office. He’ll be home before dinner.”

“How’s the leg?”

“It’s good. He gets sore and tired quicker now but he’s lost some weight and I think that’s been making it a bit easier on him.”

We walked inside and through into the kitchen. Mom had some stuff pulled out on the counter. “I was going to make a roast. Does she like roast beef?”

“She likes pretty much everything, mom. A roast sounds great.
